June 13 (Friday) Pre-Juneteenth Gospel Celebration - hosted by The Texas Emancipation Day Commission, Inc. and Bible World USA will be held at the site of one of the first African American settlements in San Antonio - Maverick Plaza in La Villita. An African American arts and crafts exhibition will be showcased throughout La Villita. State Representative Al Edwards (D) Houston, sponsor of the bill that passed in the Texas legislature recognizing June 19th as an official state holiday, will be master of ceremonies. June 13 (Friday) - Juneteenth Picnic - presented by the Zulu Association at Mateo Camargo Park. Traditionally a day-long family event, the picnic is known for its greate variety of food, music, games and fun. Continuing in the Juneteenth tradition, plenty of red soda water will be on hand and a watermelon eating contest will be held. For information call 210/637-8328

June 10 - 15 - Opening performance of the award-winning Broadway show "STOMP" at the Laurie Auditorium. Presented by the Carver Cultural Community Center, STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments. For ticket information cal 210/207-2234.

June 21-22 Junteenth Film Festival - Explore a historical pilgrimage of African Americans in film presented by St. Phillip's College. This year's festival will feature pioneer African American film screen legends from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's, to present day box office talent. For more information call 210/531-3260.

June 21-22 The 3rd Annual Texas Juneteenth Festival will be held at the Sunken Gardens Theatre. Festivities include performances by Gladys Knight, Al Greene, The Ohio Players, as well as local entertainment, food boths and an arts and crafts exhibit. For ticket information call 210/650-4471.

June 21-22 - Juneteenth Jam Festival - hosted by Take Cahrge Productions at the St. Gerard's High School Stadium. The two-day festival will feature live blues, R&B and jazz music, with food booths, and culimates with a fireworks display on Sunday night. For information call 210/534-5952.

Juneteenth Multicultural Trail Ride - Ride hoseback with a contingent of the Memorial 9th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This modern day regiment honors the Buffalo Soldiers of the Black Calvary, the first African Americans who served as regular troops in the U.S. Army in the late 1800's. Feel like a part of history as you ride for three days and two nights, along the trailway in Caprock Canyon State Park. For more information call 1-800-792-1112.

Institute of Texan Cultures, located at HemisFair Park, provides the living history and presence of African American heritage in Texas in its African American area. A new section called Free at Last focuses on the roles of African Americans in the settlement of the Americas and their unique contrbutions to the growth of Texas. As part of Juneteenth celebrations, visitors are encouraged to explore the difficult obstacles African Americans faced following Emancipation, as detailed in the Free At Last display.
