Why We
Celebrate Juneteenth
This celebration of freedom from slavery is the
oldest African-American holiday observance in the United States. However the majority of
slaves in the south were not aware of their freedom until june19,1865. For more than 200
years our ancestors were forced to submit to slavery. They prayed, cried, fought and died
for the day that they would be free. |
