• The Juneteenth National Museum is happy to announce its 11^th annual Juneteenth. celebrates an important American historical event, the Emancipation Proclamation. " Ring the bell of Freedom" is Juneteenth ‘s 1999 theme. Since the first Juneteenth celebration in Baltimore historians, students and other lovers of freedom from Maryland and other states have come to downtown Baltimore. The annual Juneteenth celebration attracts over 40,000 residents and thousands of children. People come to hear lectures on historical figures. They come for the liberation poetry and the music. Blues, Gospel, Jazz and good soul music. They come to hear local artists, among them The Blue Lights, The Billy Holiday Blues contest winner, and soothing acoustic guitar from the Blues Man. They want to ride the history Trolley, and hear lectures about African-American history, on world famous Pennsylvania Avenue. Collectors come for limited edition artist prints. They come to collect black dolls and buy unusual clocks and commemorative plates. They look for Miss Betsy and her North Carolina style soul food. Cooks want to enter the National Sweet Potato Pie Contest and children look forward to the Watermelon Seed-Spitting contest and the Yo-yo man. Fathers look forward to playing checkers. Children look forward to Double-Dutch, books by children’s authors and the new Juneteenth coloring book, by Vangar publishers. Families want to walk the Walk of Fame. People of all colors show up because Juneteenth welcomes all.  This year’s reenactment of a slave auction will be an exciting yet emotional event; we will evoke images of slavery and liberation with an historical reenactment of a slave auction. On Saturday June 19, we look forward to dance exhibitions, tap-dancers, and step dancing. A family tent, with activity tables for children and adult activities. The checkers and horseshoes pitching are sure to attract many celebrants. Join our quilting bee and work on a quilting frame, with instructor Karen Nelson. Leon Diggs and Agnes Callum, historians will lecture. Monroe Fredericks, a photographer historian for 25 years will show his historic slides. Listen as Dr. Beryl Williams Dean Emeritus of Morgan State University talks about her "At Home Museum". Gertrude Williams will lecture and demonstrate about the history of African - American Foods. Harold Dobson will show the how-to’s of researching historical information on the Internet. Gospel music is one of the most vibrant and complex music forms in the world. Families will enjoy a gospel concert at Canaan Baptist Church on Orchard Street. The Canaan Choirs have met with great success with their tapes and CD’s. Join Gumpton Records and Dance to the smooth sounds of of live performances . Finally, The New Baltimore Hand Dancers have performed in some fashion at every Juneteenth Festival. This year they will conclude our Festival with a show that is a fun filled and nostalgic show.
