The landmark bells of Minneapolis City Hall will ring out from Noon
to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19 for a concert in commemmoration of Juneteenth. The
concert will feature music of African-American songwriters,
including James Weldon Johnson, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and
Minneapolis's own Artist Formerly Known as Prince. The fifteen
bells, which range in weight from 300 to 7000 pounds, can be heard over a large
portion of downtown Minneapolis. Some optimum listening points are the plazas of the
Hennepin County Government Center and the new U.S. Courthouse, and the park opposite the
Star Tribune. Listeners are also welcome inside the 4th Street Rotunda of City Hall, where
the bells are played. The concert, which is cosponsored by downtown businesses, is
one of about 50 held on the bells throughout the year. The concert series is produced by
Tony Hill, Chair of the City Hall Carillon Committee. The City Hall Carillon Committee is
