On Saturday, June 13th, the Coalition for Improved Education in South Shore (CIESS) and the South Shore African Village Collaborative (SSAVC) will sponsor its third annual Juneteenth celebration. It begins with the "Parade of Pride" with floats, marching bands, schools, block clubs and community organizations. The day continues with a huge family style picnic while high school and grade school students read their essays on this year's theme: a salute to Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. The event is supported by the Chicago Park District and many other city and state offices as well as businesses and community organizations too numerous to mention here. The focus is to expose our community to the history of this event and provide a positive and unifying experience for our young people. Our driving motto remains: "It takes an entire village to raise a child". We will have a website in the near future but for now we can be contacted via e-mail at:ciess@aol.com or faxed to 773/684-1430. Our events coordinator is Lestine Byars. CIESS lives at: 1809 E. 71st Street, Chicago, IL 60649 Phone:773/684-6070 President, Marie Cobb Executive Director, Yvonne Williams-Kinnison.
