Four years ago Delaware initiated its annual Juneteenth
Celebration. It is a statewide celebration which to date has annually included a tour of
Underground Railroad sites throughout the State; a play which in past years has honored
the original Juneteenth Celebrators, the Buffalo
Soldiers, and the Tuskegee Airmen; a Candlelight Celebration; and a day long carnival, all
of which transpired over the course of the weekend and
centered around the week of the 19th of June of each year. Our 1998 Celebration kicked off
in January and includes a monthly series of
Juneteenth informational activities which are being conducted throughout New Castle
County, Delaware. The Celebration , which has government,
corporate, and volunteer support, will culminate the weekend of June 19-21 with the wide
range of events previously listed, but our fight to
help others remain free from today's forms of slavery will wage on.
