and fireworks during San Antonio Missions game
SAN ANTONIO (May 13, 2011)–––St. Philip’s College
observes the anniversary of Juneteenth by presenting a
prestigious lecture on campus and presenting fireworks
during a San Antonio Missions game celebrating
Juneteenth, the most widely observed celebration of the
ending of slavery in America.
The college’s President's Lecture Series program for
Juneteenth is an opportunity for audiences to hear from
and ask questions of four original 1961 Mississippi
Freedom Riders who were teenagers and front-line
activists during the struggle to ensure equal rights for
all Americans. The lecture is June 16 at 10:30 a.m. in
the 600-seat Watson Fine Arts Center at 1801 Martin
Luther King Drive. Event admission and parking are free.
E-mailed questions for reply from the four invited
original 1961 Freedom Riders will be accepted through
June 16 at noon. For information contact event organizer
Ana Lisa Garza, interim director of Enrollment
Management, at (210) 486-2300.
The title of the lecture program is Get on the Bus with
the Original Mississippi Freedom Riders, men and women
who heroically reversed the course of segregation in
interstate transportation throughout the Southern United
States. The 1961 Freedom Riders questioned and
challenged the use of race-specific waiting rooms,
restrooms and lunch counters in America’s train depots,
airports and bus stations. Students will benefit from
intensive study with prominent Freedom Riders Hezekiah
Watkins, Jesse James Davis, Hank Thomas and Delores
Lynch, and the public can observe or view the program
online.
The college concludes its 2011 Juneteenth observance
off-campus as the presentation sponsor of the San
Antonio Missions Fireworks game in honor of Juneteenth
on June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Nelson W. Wolff Stadium at
5757 Highway 90 West in San Antonio. For ticket
information contact the Missions at (210) 675-7275, or

SAN
ANTONIO |
JUNE
19, 2010 -
St.
Philip’s College will participate in the Juneteenth
Freedom Coalition’s 2010 Juneteenth Parade with marchers
and a float on the morning of June 19. The college has
entered the 2010 parade to promote education, with an
option for students, alumni, and employees to march as
volunteer participants. This year's parade lineup
departs no later than 10 a.m. from the intersection of
E. Houston St. and N. Cherry St. The parade ends no
later than noon at the west parking lot of the Joe and
Harry Freeman Coliseum at 3201 E. Houston St. A
Juneteenth Historical Ceremony on the coliseum grounds
will follow, according to parade historian Geraldine
Hoover. Riding with students on the college's float will
be St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams
Loston and Professor Emeritus Dr. William C. Davis, a
noted educator, scientist and inventor.
“It is always a high honor for our Juneteenth parade
program to include Dr. Davis on the list of role models
kids can actually see,” said 1977 St. Philip’s College
graduate and Juneteenth parade organizer Oscar Vicks.
“We ask Dr. Davis to support us when he can, because he
is a living pioneer.”
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated
commemoration of the date that slaves on the Texas Gulf
Coast island of Galveston first learned that they were
no longer slaves. Professor Emeritus Davis’ work as a
research chemist whose stamp is on such essentials as
instant mashed potatoes, soft–serve ice cream, and
particleboard, was featured in a 2010 Palo Alto Review
article Creating the Spark: A journey with Henry Ford,
George Washington Carver, Werner von Braun, and Rosalyn
Yalow. Education, empowerment and achievement are daily
components in Davis’ life. “I am partial to
Juneteenth programs that are more broad and
forward–looking than a walk down memory lane," said
Davis. "Representing St. Philip's College in this year's
parade is a way to tell people ‘it’s all about you right
now,’ while inspiring them to go to college.”
“Over the years, Dr. Davis has been a key participant in
our efforts to keep the oldest African–American
celebration alive in San Antonio,” said Hoover. “There
are many elements to our relationship with Dr. Davis and
St. Philip’s College that we are excited about. Dr.
Davis was our Juneteenth Parade honorary grand marshal
in 2008 and our parade grand marshal in 2009. He is a
great inventor, and in 2010 he was granted the title of
Professor Emeritus at St. Philip's College. We are
honored to have him enhance our program once again,"
Hoover said. For information on the 2010 parade, contact
Hoover at (210) 214–2594. |

Proclamation Reading and Prayer BreakfastTime:
8:30a.m.Location: Ashton Villa2300 Broadway Galveston,
Texas 77550Contact: Douglas Matthews (409) 772-8773The
Emancipation Proclamation will be read to commemorate
the historic event that occurred in Galveston on June
19, 1865. More than two years after the war had ended
Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston with
news that the war was over and the slaves were free. The
Emancipation Proclamation was actually enacted on
January 1, 1863, but news of the freeing of the slaves
traveled slowly, and the Union Forces were not strong
enough to enforce the code. Galveston holds the
distinction of being the place of the first reading of
the Proclamation in the South and where Juneteenth
began. This is why the reenactment is so vital to the
history of Galveston and the South. Texas State
Representative Al Edwards from Houston, Texas has been
in attendance for the last 25 years and will be present
again this year. Rep. Edwards is the originator of two
very important Juneteenth Bills. Both bills have passed
and Juneteenth is now a state holiday, the second bill
for monuments to be placed on the state grounds in
Austin, Texas and in Galveston, Texas will soon
materialize. The monument in Galveston will be unveiled
during the Juneteenth ceremony at Ashton Villa this
year. Breakfast for the public will follow the free
