CLEVELAND
June 19, 2009 - African American Cultural Gardens, Underground  - 4TH Annual Community Juneteenth Celebration we will have a candlelight vigil at the Cozad-Bates House where we will honor our fallen heroes and sheroes.  On Saturday we will gather at the African American Cultural Gardens for the Community Celebration featuring drummers, poetry, speakers and refreshments.

The Association of African American Cultural Garden’s 4th Annual Community Juneteenth Celebration will be open on June 19, 2009 with a candlelight ceremony at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Cozad-Bates House on East 115 and Mayfield Road where we will be honoring our freedom fighters and recognizing the place of the Underground Railroad in American History.  We will have drummers, African dancer’s, poetry, speakers, music and much more.
The celebration will continue on Saturday, June 20, 2009 with a community celebration at the African American Cultural Gardens on Martin Luther King Blvd.   Saturday’s event will begin at 12 noon and conclude at 6:00 p.m.
This 2 day event is designed to educate and inform the Greater Cleveland Community of the historical significance of slavery in American and African American history and its influence on the making of America. Juneteenth celebrates events that happened mainly in Texas, but also included Oklahoma and parts of Georgia and Florida.  The celebration takes its name from June 19, 1865; the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, which had gone into effect January 1, 1863.  News of the war’s end did not reach Texas until well after the surrender at Appomattox.  Many feel that the news was deliberately withheld so that slave owners could bring in one last crop. When the news finally arrived, it was celebrated with great rejoicing.
Today, Juneteenth is celebrated around the world and celebrations are a time of reflection, assessment, self improvement, rejoicing, and planning for the future.  We believe that the strength of America is in its diversity and in celebrating a multicultural society. We invite all Americans to reflect and celebrate Jubilee Day with us.  The events are free and open to the public.
