20, 2008 - UPROSE Healthcare Eduction Project & Red Hook
Rise - The Baobab - IN COMMEMORATION OF JUNE 19,
1865. Community gathering celebrating our African
Diaspora. Join our circle in commemorating one of the
most under-celebrated historical events of United States
History - the overdelayed emancipation of the slaves of
Galveston Texas. UPROSE, The Healthcare Education
Project, Generation H, and Red Hook Rise are joining to
commemorate JUNETEENTH by hosting a night of education,
culture and celebration featuring a screening of
"Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?"
and the award winning dance performance of BOMBA YO!
JUNETEENTH - June 19, 1865 - was the day that General
Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued
General Order #3 that freed the last 250,000 slaves
whose bondage, due to the minimal Union presence in the
region, had been essentially unaffected by Lincoln's
Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863.
June 19th which was quickly shortened to "Juneteenth"
among celebrants has become the African-American
addendum to our national Independence Day.
Celebrate with us our diversity and our heritage. Please
join us for free food, screening, presentation and
discussion on health care and the related issues that
arise from inequalities, disenfranchisement, poverty,
and other social dynamics. Directions to UPROSE:
"R" train to 25th Street Come for education, libations,
and liberation and invite others to this event! We look
forward to seeing you there! |
