The Gullah Geechee Cultural Center and Museum
in Riceboro will celebrate "Juneteenth" with a program Sunday afternoon recognizing "African Independence in the Lowcountry." This living history program will "tell stories of jubilation and disappointment following emancipation" in the Geechee lands of coastal Georgia, said Jim Bacote, who operates the cultural center along with his wife, Pat.

Sponsored by the 2000 Freedom Fighters and the Cupidettes, Decatur's Juneteenth celebration is now an annual event. This year's celebration is June 17-19 at True Apostolic Community Church on 11th Avenue Northwest and Smith's Park on East Moulton Street.
The theme for the celebration is "Education and Voting Gives Men Legal Rights to Success." This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the voting rights act, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in March 1965.
