WILMAR
June14, 15, 16 - The Juneteenth Association of Wilmar, AR - The June Dinner Celebration in Wilmar is the longest running festival in the state.  It began, as the name suggests, as a big pot luck dinner back in the 1800's.  Newly freed slaves got together, communed, and played games.  At this particular time, however, they had to ask their white bosses (Most were lumber workers and field hands) if they could have the day off.  Miraculously, the request was never denied.
The theme for this year is 'A Little Bit of Heaven, June Dinner '07'.
Thursday June 14, is when we kick off the celebration with a bon fire.  Over the years, the bon fire pile has continued to expand.  One year it looked to be as tall as a 2 story building.
