WILMAR
|
June14,
15, 16 - The Juneteenth Association of Wilmar, AR -
The June Dinner Celebration in Wilmar is the longest
running festival in the state. It began, as the
name suggests, as a big pot luck dinner back in the
1800's. Newly freed slaves got together, communed,
and played games. At this particular time,
however, they had to ask their white bosses (Most were
lumber workers and field hands) if they could have the
day off. Miraculously, the request was never
denied.
The theme for this year is 'A Little Bit of Heaven, June
Dinner '07'.
Thursday June 14, is when we kick off the celebration
with a bon fire. Over the years, the bon fire pile
has continued to expand. One year it looked to be
as tall as a 2 story building.
Friday June 15 is Blues Night. a performing will
be The Mickey Rogers Soul Masters out of Greenville,
Miss.
Saturday June 18, is June Dinner Day!!!! WE have
Scheduled events from dawn to dawn.
6am Walk-a-thon ($5 entry fee)
12pm honors ceremony
12:30pm parade line up
1pm Parade and Show yo Ride extravaganza
4pm Motor cycle burn-out
