| Longview |
The Real Cowboys
Association will present its 10th Annual Juneteenth Rodeo on Saturday at the Longview
Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena. The grand entry will begin at 7:30 p.m., and show time will
be 8 p.m. The rodeo will feature more than 300 cowboys from Mississippi, Oklahoma,
Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas. Events will include team roping, calf roping, bull
dogging, ladies' barrel racing, bull riding, drill teams, a childrens calf scramble
and specialty acts. The cowboys and cowgirls will compete during a slack Saturday morning;
competitors with the best time will come back to perform in the rodeo. The top 10 in each
event will be featured at the rodeo. Also, children younger than 15 will compete in the
rodeos junior division. Frank Edwards, president of the Real Cowboys Association,
said the rodeo is geared toward educating the public about black cowboys. He said for a
long time, cowboys of color were not featured in Western movies and books. He said the
Juneteenth rodeo features black, Native American, Hispanic and Asian cowboys. More
than 3,500 people attend the rodeo each year, and Edwards said vendors will sell rodeo
novelties, black art and Western gear. "As a producer, I had to grow in rodeo
knowledge, and once I grew, the community grew," Edwards said. "The community
has always embraced the rodeo."
The Real Cowboys Association is a nonprofit organization that has presented rodeos in
Shreveport and Monroe, La., and Oklahoma. Next year, the rodeo will travel to Hattiesburg
and Biloxi, Miss. Edwards said the rodeo changes over the years because music changes, and
that takes it to another level. "Now they play hip-hop and R&B music during the
rodeo because that's what the audience knows and recognizes," he said. "You
haven't been to a rodeo if you haven't seen a Real Cowboys Association Juneteenth
Rodeo." Admission is $8 for adults and $10 at the gate and $5 for children 6 to 12.
Children 5 and younger are admitted free with two canned goods. Tickets are
available at E.T.'s Gospel Music and Cavender's Boot City in Longview and C&M
Entertainment in Henderson. The association also will host two parties. The after-party
for adults will begin at 9 p.m. at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center. The Summer
Jams party for youths 20 and younger will begin at 9 p.m. at the Longview Exhibit Building
at the fairgrounds. Admission for each party is $5 with a rodeo stub or $7 at the door.
The parties are aimed at encouraging community involvement with the cowboys and cowgirls
after the rodeo. Edwards said some people who dont attend the rodeo usually come to
the after-parties. For information, call Edwards at (903) 753-3165.
