OCEANSIDE

  • The North San Diego County W.I.N. and NAACP present Juneteenth 2002 Multicultural Freedom Festival. The event will be held at the Oceanside Pier and Amphitheater on Saturday June 15, 2002 from 10 AM until 5 PM. Activities will include music by local artists, crafts, rides for children, and food vendors. The Women In NAACP has dedicated its focus on building a better community by addressing the needs of the community, from health care availability to home ownership support. VALLEJO

  • The Solano County African American Family Reunion Celebration Committee has hosted the annual Black Family Day - Juneteenth on the third Saturday in June since 1989. This year's event on June 15, 2002 is held at the Marina Vista Park located behind the Vallejo City Hall building complex between the downtown area and the waterfront.   The event features a Health Fair with issues impacting African American families. Educational and informational mini-workshops feature specific health care concerns. The food and craft vendors have a diverse sampling of cultural items to tempt participants. The children's activities consists of pony and horse rides, jumps, storytelling, facepainting and other interesting things for children to do.  Vallejo's Juneteenth Celebration is the largest and longest running 1-day festival in Solano County and was recently featured in the Vacaville Museum's exhibit, Solano Celebrates! Fairs, Festivals & Fun.  The purpose of this event is to recognize the many historical achievement of African American families and to encourage constructive and collabroative efforts to deal with today's concerns. Also to unify the community for proactive choices in the face of national concerns impacting African American families in education, health, drug abuse, teen pregnancy and employability.

STOCKTON

  • The African American Chamber of Commerce will host it's 3rd Annual, City-wide Celebration, that has drawn thousands in the past two years. CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH WITH BLUES ROYALTY "THE KING BROTHERS" JUNE 19 Wild Wednesdays! free noon concert series celebrates Juneteenth with the San Francisco blues band The King Brothers at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, Wednesday, June 19, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The Center is located at 3330 Civic Center Drive, Torrance. In celebration of Juneteenth, the anniversary of the date when the last slaves in America were freed, Wild Wednesdays! presents premier practitioners of the African American musical idiom. Sam and Lee King inherited their blues styling from second cousins and blues legends Freddy and Albert King. The King Brothers have been playing together for 30 years. In addition, Lee has played with Ike Turner, Big Joe Turner, Freddy King, and Albert King, while Sam has toured with Albert King, recording the landmark "Blues at Sunrise" album. The King Brothers won over 1,000 entries to earn a Budweiser endorsement, and between their more than 150 shows a year, they find time to be the house band for LA radio station KLSX-FM. The King Brothers won a Bammie award for the 1999 "Most Outstanding Blues Artist." SAN FRANCISCO

  • "Embracing Each Other Across the Nation" is the theme of hte 2002 San Francisco Juneteenth Festival. The Parade, to be held on June 15th, will start at 9:00am on the Golden Gate Park Panhandle (Masonic and Oak streets). The festival, June 15th and 16th, will take place on Fillmore Street between Eddy and Geary Blvd., beginning at noon. Live entertainment includes The Temptations Motown Revue, JT the Bigga Figga, Roy Tyler (formerly of the Gospel Hummingbirds), Lacye Baker and the Black Diamond Band.   • On June 22, The High Desert will have its First Annual Juneteenth Celebration. The celebration will be hosted by the Afro-American Historical committee of Barstow, a coalition of dedicated representatives from our local black community. It will be held from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm at Sturnacle Park in Barstow. Sturnacle Park is located one block north of Riverside Drive on the end of Mesa Drive. Activities planned for the day are baseball and basketball games, double dutch jump rope competition, old fashioned games for the kids, music and dancing, a barbecue and a number of speakers from the local community and churches.
