African-Americans have celebrated this historical moment through celebrations of music,
food, art, and dance. In order to expand and enhance Juneteenth 2001 at the Oakland Zoo,
support from sponsors and organizations like yours will help us to expose a part of
African-American culture that many people do not know or see. We feel that with your

Name of Organizations: Sierra Army Depot, Base Youth Services, Base Drama, Club
(Youth), Individual Members of the American G.I.Forum,
Types of Activities: Ethnic Dance Production, Production of a One Act Play,
titled,"Freedom is My Middle Name," and brief lectures about what Juneteenth Day
is all about. Date: June 19, 2001 Time: 1700 (7:00 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time) Sponsors:
Carlos Lleguer, Historian/Dramatist and Base Youth Services The project is also supported
by our base commander, Colonel Moses Whitehurst Jr. Theme: Multicultural Juneteenth:
Between 1521 and 1865 Texas was for the most part under the oppression of one or other of
three slave empires: The Spanish Empire, The "Republic of Texas," or the
Southern Confederate Empire of the Southern U.S.A. The only exception was perhaps a very
brief period after Mexico's independence in 1821 -- but a very short lived exception. In
1521 the Indians of Mexico were conquered and enslaved by the Spanish tyrants of Spain,
and 25,000 of them died under the harsh rule of Spanish Gachpines. These Indian slaves
after their genocide were replaced by African slaves. One of the principal goals of
Mexico's struggle for freedom against Spanish tyranny was the emancipation of all slavery
in Mexico including Texas. However, almost no sooner than did Mexico gain her independence
than did Texas begin seeing another kind of tyranny, the tyranny of the Southern Anglo
enslaver from the Southern U.S.A. Starting in 1821 and in complete defiance of all of
Mexican law, the enslavers from the Southern U.S.A. began reintroducing slavery in Texas
-- this time Anglo African slavery. In time they would take over in Texas despite Mexico's
brave attempts to emancipate slavery in Texas and to restore order. According to the
reports of the Alcalde of San Antonio in 1836 more than 1600 brave Mexican freedom
fighters died in their brave effort to liberate their Alamo which had been taken from them
by the Anglo American enslaverby force. The enslavers lost less than 200 because they had
the overwhelming advantage in fire power. In fact the enslavers had at least thirty-six
(36) cannon while the Mexican/Tejano freedom fighters had only ten (10). Furthermore, the
enslavers had modern rifles with an accurate kill range of more than 200 yards, while the
Mexican freedom fighters were armed mostly with old worn out flint locked muskets with a
total range of less than 75 yards. With the ultimate loss of Texas to the Anglo American
enslaver, Texas became a slave republic from 1836-1846, a slave state of the Southern
U.S.A from 1846-1860, and then finally a slave state of the Southern Confederacy from
1861-1865. Juneteenth Day, June 19, 1865, thus ended more than 344 years of slavery in and
of Texas. The above facts are brought out in an audio drama by Carlos Lleguer titled,
"A Tejano Juneteenth" which will be sold as a fundraiser to help fund the local
"Juneteenth" Day activity
