as we celbrate Afrikan Freedom Days In our Afrikan way. We will have music, games, info on
Juneteenth, Jankanuu Masquerade and much, much more this will be the our
tenth(10th)aniversary celebration. Our celebration began in 1990 when a local
Afrikan-american bookstore then known as Progressive Emporium was damaged due to a fire
bombing. Upon the re-opening of Progressive the celebration was combined with Juneteenth.
In order to recognize and honor the struggle and triumph of the Afrikan Spirit over
chattel slavery. It also honors Progressive's continued committment for raising the

- The Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis Forest Park announces
its second annual Juneteenth celebration. This event will call upon everyone to
"Commemorate the Past; Celebrate Freedom; and Imagine the Future." At 2:30 p.m.
on Sunday, June 18, 2000 the program will begin in the Museums Lee Auditorium. There
will be a brief talk by Dr. Sundiata Cha-jua, professor of Historical Studies at Southern
Illinois University, and Eric Robinson of J.E. Robinson Tours. Mr. Robinson will speak of
his experience giving tours of the Alton, IL Underground Railroad as an introduction to
the St. Louis Black Repertory Theater Companys Slave Narrative play. At 4:00 p.m.
The event will move outdoors as Eugene B. Redmond, acclaimed poet, will perform some of
his poetry. The musical section of the program will feature the local talent of the jazz
group Trio Oro. Throughout the day, guests are asked to celebrate family heritage with an
Underground Railroad quilting activity. Food and drink will be available for purchase;
however, guests are welcome and encouraged to bring a picnic and lawn chairs. The Missouri
Historical Society hopes that all of these activities will encourage commemoration,
celebration, and family bonding. This is a FREE event at the Missouri History Museum in

- Our name is DIVINITY, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that focuses on
the promotion of cultural arts. We just recently completed our 3rd annual Langston
Hughes...Poetry Festival, and it was a huge success. Our artistic director, Mr. Dahveed
Nelson, founder of the Last Poets, has again spearheaded an tremendous festival in
commemoration of Juneteeth. Our 2nd Juneteenth celebration will be held at CLUB DIVINITY,

- Juneteenth Heritage and Jazz Festival, St. Louis
The largest Juneteenth Celebration in the nation takes place June 9th thru June 10th. The
festival features such jazz and blues greats as The Jazz Crusaders, Bobbi Humphrey, Roy
Hargrove, Long John Hunter, Deborah Colemen and Bobby Rush. For a complete festival

The Juneteenth Celebration Committe of Mexico,MO will be comemorating the holiday
on the weekend of June 17th and 18th at Garfield Park. We have invited vendors from varies
parts of Missouri and will honor Mr.Tom Bass,a Mexico native and nationally known horse
breeder. In addittion,a tribute to the first black high school- Garfield High will be the
highlight of our Sunday ceremonies. Guest speakers, 3 on 3 basketball tournaments,
baseball games, horse rides, an exhibit of Mr.Bass' life and other games for the kids will
be some of the other events for our community to enjoy. Donations are accepted.
